Chelsea are making a late run for the European places this season, but they'll have to be pretty much flawless to have any chance of succeeding – and that's not a word that immediately springs to mind when describing Mauricio Pochettino's unpredictable side. They've only lost one of their last 33 home league ties with Tottenham, though, so recent history is on their side. The man in charge of Spurs for that defeat in 2018? He'll be sitting in the home dugout tonight.
After two defeats in a row for the first time since November, Tottenham find themselves seven points behind Aston Villa, who currently inhabit the final Champions League spot. Spurs won't face Villa again this season, so they'll need to make sure they take maximum points from their remaining games to be in with a chance of leapfrogging The Villains – starting with tonight's must-win encounter.
One of London's great footballing rivalries is resumed on Thursday night as Chelsea and Tottenham face off at Stamford Bridge with plenty at stakes for both sides. The latter will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 home defeat to Arsenal on Sunday and in the process put pressure on Aston Villa in the race for the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Any kind of European football at all would be good news for Chelsea, ninth in the table but only five points behind seventh-placed Newcastle with a game in hand. The previous meeting between these two in the Premier League was one of the most ludicrously entertaining encounters of the season, nine-man Spurs' commitment to an ultra-high line ultimately costing them in a 4-1 defeat where Chelsea somehow managed to underwhelm more than in many of their 11 league losses this season.
It will be an auspicious occasion for Mauricio Pochettino on Thursday night, the Argentine taking charge of his 400th game in English football after spells at Southampton and Tottenham that were altogether more successful than his Chelsea tenure has so far been. "That was one of the best decisions in my life to come here to England and enjoy this great football country," said the Argentine. "Of course, I feel really comfortable. It is like home."
It has, however, been a trying time for Pochettino of late, one not eased by any injury list that never seems to shrink. Indeed Chelsea will now be without 14 first-team players when Spurs come to west London, Axel Disasi and Thiago Silva heading to the treatment room after impressing in Saturday's draw with Aston Villa. The injury crisis means that Thursday's game will be "great opportunity for some kids to be on the bench" but Alfie Gilchrist might be the only youngster to make the XI.
Having conceded two goals from Arsenal dead balls on Sunday the focus has once more turned to Ange Postecoglu's refusal to hire a set-piece coach. Given that Spurs have let in the 12 from set pieces this season -- not including own goals like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's at the weekend -- there is clearly something that needs to improve at the league's sixth-worst dead ball defense.
Still, Postecoglu is looking at the bigger picture. "I think I've answered this question and I don't think it satisfies people, but no, I don't see it as an issue. It's something that we work on along with everything in our game. There are far more important things that we need to concentrate on at the moment in terms of the team we're building.
Mauricio Pochettino takes on his former club Spurs for the second time this season after guiding the Blues to a 4-1 victory in north London earlier in the campaign. A 10-man Tottenham were beaten thanks to a hat-trick from Nicolas Jackson for Chelsea to gain bragging rights over their rivals.
However, Spurs have had the better season as a whole and still have the opportunity to finish in the top four. Aston Villa occupy fourth-place at the moment, but Tottenham have two games in-hand on their rivals and sit seven points below them – making tonight's fixture even more significant.
Chelsea, meanwhile, can still finish in seventh-place, which will be enough to qualify for the Europa Conference League next term. There is so much riding on tonight's match for very different reasons and it is set to be a hugely entertaining one as well.
Ange Postecoglou's side are in a shootout with Aston Villa to finish fourth and secure the final Champions League spot behind Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Spurs are seven points behind Villa with two games in hand on their rivals - however, Tottenham come into the Chelsea clash on the back of consecutive defeats, including a north London derby loss against Arsenal on Sunday.
If Tottenham win their two games in hand, they'll be one point behind Villa ahead of the final three matches of the season. Chelsea, who drew 2-2 against Aston Villa on Saturday night, find themselves in ninth place and set to miss out on European football once again this campaign - unless their form dramatically turns around.
